K-12 and Family Programs
The SWROC works with University of Minnesota Extension to connect rural communities to a wide range of University of Minnesota resources through our K-12 and family programs. By developing and hosting programs for students, teachers and professionals working with children, youth and families, we bring University expertise directly to learners in southwestern Minnesota. All of our programs strive to enhance rural vitality by improving the knowledge base and access to resources among students, teachers, and professionals in our region.
K-12 Student Programs
We hold a number of programs designed to improve students' understanding of science and increase their enthusiasm for the topic. University on the Prairie is a three-day summer program that allows students in grades 7-12 to explore science topics and related careers. Every fall, Elementary Field Day provides a unique opportunity for area fourth-graders to learn about agricultural and environmental science, health and safety and food production.
K-12 Teacher Programs
Our teacher programs provide professional development opportunities for K-12 teachers to increase their knowledge and skill for teaching science-related topics. All programs are aligned with the Minnesota Graduation Standards and support classroom teachers with curriculum resources and access to University resources.
Improving Teacher Quality is a 10-day summer workshop that helps teachers better prepare students for science assessments, while furthering their understanding of the scientific inquiry process.
