SW MN IPM Stuff 2024 - Notes 6/11/2024

Corn rootworm egg hatch begins in SW MN

Using the rootworm development model with a 52 F base the beginning of western corn rootworm egg hatch is predicted at 380 DDs. 50% of the eggs are predicted to have hatched between 654 and 687.

The Southwest Research and Outreach Center (SWROC) reached the 380 development threshold between June 8 (air temp) and June 10 (4" soil depth).   Coincidently, reports of firefly observations began over the weekend.

Soybean gall midge emergence began at the Rock County research site on June 4. For more soybean gall midge information see https://soybeangallmidge.org/.  I am curious to see how soybean gall midge populations respond to the wetter season in areas with early planted soybeans.

I hope the rain and storms in the forecast are the result of bad weather forecast models.

Happy trails,
Bruce
