Biography
Strock’s research focuses on agricultural drainage and water and nutrient management in agricultural systems, addressing production needs along with quantifying and mitigating negative off-site environmental impacts. Seasonal excess water can contribute to crop damage and may also be lost from farm fields due to drainage reducing the potential for being beneficially used by the crop and contributing to downstream damage from peak flows and water quality degradation from increased nutrient transport. Periods of water deficit cause crop yield loss and can leave pools of unused nutrients available for crop uptake or subsequent leaching. Research includes testing and improving drainage water management practices (i.e. cover cropping, bioreactors, constructed wetlands, and ditch management) to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus mobility and developing new, innovative agronomic management practices to improve crop yield and water and nutrient use efficiency.
Research
My research activities are grouped into two complementary areas: those related to drainage water management practices and those related to nutrient management practices. I direct a field-based research program aimed at developing integrated water and nutrient management solutions for crop and livestock producers that reduces off-site nutrient mobility and improves water and nutrient use efficiency and crop yield. Effective management practice solutions are essential elements of resilient agricultural systems. Research project themes include:
- agricultural drainage water management and conservation;
- cropping system impacts and interactions among soil properties, the water balance, and nitrogen and carbon cycling (crop rotation, tillage, cover cropping)
- nutrient management (N, P, S).
